Montecristo Eco Lodge is one of the very few accommodations that don’t contaminate the river, it has 4 septic tanks, produces its own solar energy and has the best potable water well in the whole area, utilize good practices for the environment and recycle, reutilize and reduce waste as much as possible.
All the little towns and almost all the little hotels along the San Juan River dump they grey water into the San Juan River. During the dry season, you could see the PVC piping coming out of their property into the river. This creates and environmental impact that grows proportionally as population growth as well as tourist staying as guest on those places..
Hurricane Otto on November 2016 caused huge damage to the lodge and most of the rain forest of Indio Maiz biological reserve. It took more than a year for the lodge to get back on its feet; the government minimized the damage and left Montecristo with false hope of assistance. Now is under new management and is trying to make a comeback, and need your support by stayig as a guess when you visit the San Juan River.
While the rest of property owner are selling the timber and converting the land into cattle ranches, causing damage to the natural landscape of the area, Montecristo wildlife refuge decided to keep protecting it land, by not selling timber and let it regenerate by itself.
The trails are now used by wildlife that are concentrating in our refuge due to the increasing shrinking of their habitat, because other land owner are clearing land around to sell the timber and converting the rain forest into cattle country.
